This is probably the best clip that I have ever shot with Chronos cameras https://youtu.be/EuiUnfsKLJ8?t=423

It's 1000 fps and so good it's hard to tell apart from Sony A6400 clips that we have on the same video. Lens is 50-100 f1.8 Sigma zoom and I think it wasn't wide open with this one

I was just about to post the pad lock video but Nikon1 were faster :D

We should have great stuff coming since we have two sunny explosion days on this week. I have something out probably on next weekend.

The sigma 50-100 f1.8 is 1.5kg and it seems to be just fine. Only problem is that the tiny adapter thing before the c -> to Nikon adapter gets really tight to Nikon adapter and you have to use somekind of pliers to get it free  ;D But the 50-100 mm lens has already thread for tripod on the lens it self so it's bit more balanced when mounted from there.

Here is some tests that I made today https://youtu.be/uJkoIlmD5V0

Seems that I missed the focus on last one slightly. The larger sensor and a fast lens that is sharp even wide open make focusing bit more demanding but I think I am going to get used to really making sure that it's spot on. But other than that I think the picture looks really good already. The first shot was really demanding since it was really dark and we were still shooting 1000fps.

I got the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 installed to the camera and it works really well. I think I am going to get some video out at latest on Sunday with the new camera.

The adapter ring with aperture control works really well. The lens is also really nice to use, focus is really smooth and even if the focus plane is quite shallow the focus peeking on the camera makes it easy to focus. I think I am going to probably get the SIGMA 50-100MM F/1.8 for second lens so I can use two cameras at the same time and having longer lens is handy for really stupid stuff  ;D

I ended up buying Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 lens and ordering couple of those fancy adapters that allow to control the aperture (one for color camera and one for my upcoming monochrome camera). I think I am going to buy at least one more lens so I can film with both cameras at the same time but I decide that after I have used this lens for a while.

I think I have to get lot more trigger cables since I have now already 3 cameras and it would be nice to trigger them one-by-one on some situations and from far away.

I sent email to that lens store and asked do they have any parts that could do the job of keeping it open. I have way too much things to do so it would be great to just solve this with out starting to design and manufacture parts :D

But the prime lens set is also pretty good option. Those would be quite fast lenses and the price isn't totally crazy.

I found one used lens for sale near. https://kamerastore.com/product/nikon-24-70mm-f2-8-g-ed-n-af-s-nikkor-7/

I think that could be probably pretty good and since it's just f 2.8 no need for any trickery to keep it open. Does anybody know whats the crop factor with Nikon lenses and the mount that comes with the camera?

Chronos User Discussion / Chronos 2.1 lenses

There was already some discussion about lenses on other topic but I thought that this subject deserves it's own topic. I have been too busy to think about what lens to get and now the camera just arrived and I don't have anything suitable to film with it :D Only lens that I have is my dad's old russian 500mm mirror lens that would be probably something like 2000 mm with the crop factor taken into account. I think I have to do at least one video with the combination still :D

I think I don't want to just use some Nikon glass with always wide open hack so I have to find totally manually controllable lens and it would be probably good to be at least f 2.8

With regular cameras I use quite often prime lenses since there is enough pixels to zoom in on edit when necessary on 4k image but that's not option here so probably have to find zoom lens and it ain't going to cheap with these specs probably :D If anybody has good recommendations those are welcome.

I Had to order one with the color sensor. I am also tempted to order second one with monochrome sensor but my wife would get even more angry so I think I have to pass that :D

The Chronos 1.4 has been really good for Youtube use but some of our customers that are ordering add videos etc. don't want to use 720p footage at all. But now I can still have my 1500 high speed camera fee on final bill with out paying same amount for Phantom rental :D

I just realized that you don't need to buy any expensive plugins to generate missing frames to rise your frame rate in editing. Premier pro has this tool called optical flow that does just that. Here is example video that I made the first clips of each slow motion sequence are played out around 12.5 fps and the software generates every other frame to make that smooth 25 fps https://youtu.be/A6nvM7pYBGc?t=2m25s

I did also same trickery for some 500 fps footage out from 4k phantom camera and if you use 50% speed for the footage, have around 90 degree or faster shutter and simple background it seems to be working really well!

I think I try next to use this same tool for something like 15 000 fps chronos footage and try to make it 30 000 - 40 000 fps footage.

I think I should try out prime lenses that I have now here for the cameras if there is a difference. But in general we need zoom lenses on all cameras when we film since we don't have much time to use per one video, safety things also dictate camera placement and with high speed cameras the changing resolution makes things also bit hard. I try to always stay over 2 aperture since I think under that picture comes out always bit soft.

I was really surprised how well this weeks Chronos footage compares to our previous Smashinator videos that were filmed with +200 000 Phantom setup. https://youtu.be/MYoBkIzkH1k

Sure it's bit nicer and with high frame rate but on Youtube use especially framerates bellow 3000fps are pretty damn nice.

« on: April 28, 2018, 11:29:58 PM »
I shoot lot through polycarbonate and when it's new it doesn't effect the picture quality but it's quite soft material and scratches easily. So if you have to film lot through same shield it's good idea to make small window and replaceable smaller shield for that so you don't need to change hole big and expensive blast shield when it gets some scratches.

But if you have only bb's flying and maybe bouncing back I would fit just protective filter for the lens. The uv-filters are one option but there is more durable filters that are meant to be used as an shield's. And make sure that the camera doesn't fall from the hits and you should be ok :D My chronos has been hit quite many times with various shrapnel and it works just fine :D
