Software Dev / Re: Chronos V0.3.2-RC1
« on: July 29, 2019, 12:00:09 AM »
Ok did some testing...

Everything works as expected with what seems improved column noise pattern reduction after calibration. It still requires camera warming up to get to a point where the calibration works pretty well, that is about 26 minutes warm up.
Fan goes faster when using AC power vs the battery, that is to be expected.

1 Bug Found: when using HDMI monitoring, you activate the focus asist function (peaking) on the camera and it slows to a crawl then image locks up and no motion is attained. Only fix is unplug the HDMI cable and things return to normal.  Camera refreshes signal and regular operation resumes.

It seems the cpu is overwhelmed when peaking is activated and HDMI is operating. Tried with a field monitor and an LCD viewfinder both showed the same problem,

Great job on the nice features like improved fps and storage info + format options, much appreciated!  :D

Great News!

Do we have to factory calibrate after applying this update or just use it as is?  Will test this weekend. Thank you!

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Forced to sell wife has cancer :(
« on: June 01, 2019, 06:30:42 PM »
I feel for you, we have been in the same situation for over a year now. Pregnant wife 39yrs old first child and breast cancer. Baby is fine after two chemo rounds. Wife did 8 and is now in radiation therapy. It has been a tough experience emotionally and financially. We had to sell a lot of things and forego many others and bills keep coming in.  Wish you the best of luck with your situation, there is light at the end of the tunnel, hang in there and never lose focus.

Considering these cameras are now more expensive I am sure you will get takers.  Try also posting it on other services like eBay if it doesn't work out here.

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Wish List - Tripod Mount
« on: May 06, 2019, 04:05:54 PM »
My camera had the same problem but noticed that the thread itself is not anchored to the camera and rotates sometimes to the outside. Once the thread renained on the tripod screw when dismounting. If you use a pair of pliers or rubber band you can rotate it out if it has the same problem as my camera. I have been thinking of using superglue to bolt it forever but if it breaks one day it will be a nightmare to get it replaced.

The 2.1 is  10µm sized pixels while the 1.4 is 6.6µm or 34% larger on the 2.1 which is really great. Now the sensor is more advanced which means better noise control which shows in the demo footage and that was not even shot at the final camera specs but in a 4k sensor with 5.0um pixels which are smaller than the Chronos 1.4 6.6um.  So expect a serious low light performance upgrade in the final 2.1. 😉

This should be a popular upgrade, thanks!

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Introducing Chronos 2.1 HD!
« on: April 13, 2019, 02:11:11 PM »
As I understand, there will be a m4/3 mount accessory on the Chronos store at some point. What I don't know yet is how the reduced flange distance will factor into this. Aimed Research did a trial 3D printed m4/3 mount for the 1.4 and the tolerance and spaces were extremely small from C to m4/3.  There is value in offering m4/3 lens support because there are dozens of excellent non electronic manual cinema style lenses for the platform like rokinons and SLR magics.
The 2.1 seems to be a camera that will really change the market and allow ownership of full HD slow mo to everyone. Great Mission!

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Black calibration best practices
« on: April 02, 2019, 10:18:59 PM »
Thanks for reading the blog!

I personally do the following now on the Chronos:

1) Start up camera...
2) Do black calibration immediately.
3) Wait up to 15min redo black cal
4) Wait an extra 15min do a new Black cal then ready for first shoot.
5) Repeat black cal every 30min to 1hr of continued operation.

Sure it is laborious but it is really a matter of reducing this artifact as the sensor and camera heat up.  Many slow motion cameras have this problem and some of the best require a new calibration every shot or every time any setting is changed. Edgertronics dobauto calibration on every start up and on every setting change but since it only takes 2sec andchas an automatic shutter curtain it becomes easier. We still saw shadow bands and verticals on edgertronic footage as the camera warmed up or got hotter which is normal in our reviews.

Try NeatVideo noise reduction plug in, it does wonders with any residual banding.

Wow nobody said it was easy, lots of work behind the scenes. Thanks for sharing your progress and process to get there!

Glad to know the banding is being improved, thanks for the heads up!  :)

I see lots of work behind the scenes. I was wondering if we could save Black Cal profiles that can be recalled instead of waiting for the camera to warm up and calibrate several times to reduce the vertical banding every use. To get to a pretty clean image it takes me about 26min and 4-5 black cals.   Thanks DDR!

Software Dev / Re: Chronos V0.3.1 Beta - Updated Oct 15 2018 with beta-9
« on: October 17, 2018, 10:22:07 PM »
DNG capture works great, usable on the latest CC no problems. I found a bug that some 1st frames would come out blank but it is only on some clips not all of them, wonder if it has to do with the memory buffer?   CinemaDNG is now my one stop for the Chronos, it is just a breeze to use and the post abilities and increased resolution compared to H.264 make the Gigabytes of files worth it.   Next stop HDMI testing!

The camera has really grown since the early days, love the ability to see shutter degrees as well much appreciated!  Is there a 1/sec option buried somewhere?  Degrees is fine but fractions of a second make it much easier to freeze blur without converting degrees.  I have found that 1/4000 works very well on the Chronos for freezing and obliterating most day to day objects that are much slower than a bullet.

The DNG Read problem for Adobe software is being worked on, some tags were missing or modified. Once that update is ready I will resume testing.  Should be a breeze to shoot DNG Sequences outright and it also makes it possible to save much longer clips as file size limits do not interfere as each image is under 2MB and you can basically fill the card to the brim.   :D
