Software Dev / Re: Chronos V0.7.0 Full Release
« on: April 11, 2024, 01:14:03 PM »
Dear All,

there seems to be a newer version than 7.1 (which is linked on the website) in the repository. Namely the 20220124 build.  Is this more recent? what are the changes? Is there further development of the 1.4 and 2.1 firmware planned or even already available?

I think the only difference between firmware version 0.7.1 and 0.7.2 (the 20220124 build) is automatic re-connection to NFS and SMB network shares on camera startup, and this is still the latest version.

Thanks. The problem is that the updating process won't go further than that screenshot that I attached. From reading the manual I would expect it to lead to a "install now yes/no button" pop up after that. But it is just stuck there... far longer than 3 minutes.

Sounds like the simplest option is to remove the microSD card and flash it with the latest firmware.

Otherwise, if you're feeling brave, you could SSH into your Chronos and update your package sources. Once your sources are updated to reflect the archived Jessie packages, the Chronos firmware updater should start working for you again.

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/backports-debian.list
Code: [Select]
deb [arch=armel] http://archive.debian.org/debian jessie-backports main contrib non-free
deb [arch=armel] http://archive.debian.org/debian stretch-backports main contrib non-free

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/multistrap-debian.list
Code: [Select]
deb [arch=armel] http://archive.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free
deb-src http://archive.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free

Make sure to run `apt update` after modifying the above two files to reflect those archive.debian.org urls

I have this cable as well. I am looking for a way to connect that cable to a computer to get the data off that drive...

Maybe adapt the eSATA cable to USB with a product such as this? https://www.amazon.com/ShineBear-Converter-Adapter-External-Compatibility/dp/B07NNT9P58/

Hi! I'm saving tiffs to a 480GB Sandisk SSD Plus via eSata. I thought this was the recommended method, but how is everyone getting their videos onto their computers? Right now i'm switching out the cables (from a 22pin SATA/esata cable to a 22pin SATA/usb cable)...which I worry is going to break down the SSDs pins over time. I tried this cable (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N1KYP7U?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details) but then the hard drive doesn't show up on the camera or the computer...any advice is very much appreciated!!
Thank you!!
Laura

If your drive isn't showing up, it might not be getting enough power.

I use an eSATA cable with my Chronos 2.1 and a TEAMGROUP GX2 Solid State Drive. Luckily haven't had any issues with connectors breaking.

Hi everyone!

I bought my Chronos 2.1HD about 2 years ago and was wondering if there was an firmware upgrade in the meantime.

When I connect my Chronos to the Ethernet cable that feeds my PC with internet I only get to the point where the Chronos is
"Updating Package Lists" but not beyond...

There is also a lot of 404s in that log shown, so I am not sure if I am doing anything wrong or if
the files no longer exist on the server my Chronos wants to access...

When I load the 32gb SD card with the latest image file from this thread via Elenabatcher there is no local drive showing up in the Chronos either.

Any ideas?

Best regards

Dominik

I believe the 404s you're noticing are because the Debian packages it's trying to download were archived and moved to a different address. It's probably fine to ignore those 404s- the Chronos firmware packages should still update successfully.

Alternatively you could follow the manual updating instructions documented here: https://www.krontech.ca/software-resources/

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Spare Battery with charger for chronos 2.1 hd
« on: February 02, 2024, 12:03:21 PM »
If you're looking for an internal battery (EN-EL4A):

Jupio: my favorite, because it lasts the longest (~90 min)
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1564339-REG/jupio_bni0003_proline_en_el4_en_el4a_li_ion_battery.html

Kastar: two batteries and a charger costing less than one Jupio, each usually lasts about ~45min for my Chronos 2.1
https://www.amazon.com/Kastar-Charger-Battery-EN-EL4-EN-EL4A/dp/B01LEP353I/

Alternatively you could use an external battery. I've tried a few, and so far my favorites are from FXLION or REYTRIC. These work with the Chronos 4K12 and Q12 models as well.

Chronos User Discussion / Re: View recorded frame rate
« on: January 29, 2024, 02:59:08 PM »
Unfortunately the latest Chronos firmware doesn't embed any metadata in MP4 files. However if you captured any DNG files, the shutter speed is included as metadata which might serve as a clue for recalling the frame rate.

If you were always shooting at the max fps, you could simply cross reference the resolution of each MP4 with the max frame rate your Chronos reports for each of those.

You might want to consider specifying a folder path or file name to include metadata such as the recording frame rate, however this is user error prone- it would require training yourself to verify the encoding settings dialog prior to each save

Thanks for your reply, can you suggest any imaging software whick work well with chronos.

DaVinci Resolve is a common choice of software for viewing & editing footage from the Chronos. It's free, runs on Linux, Mac, Windows, and there's even an iPad version. Blackmagic makes a lot of professional video equipment for it, and typically includes a license for the commercial version with a hardware purchase. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products

Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, and Sony Vegas Pro are some other popular commercial options.

Kdenlive is another great option- it's free, open source, and runs on Linux, Mac and Windows https://kdenlive.org/en/

Topaz Video AI works well for enhancing Chronos footage, and is especially useful when capturing at higher frame rates which require reduced resolution.

We need to know.
Does Chronos 1.4 support below:

Chronos 1.4 high speed camera should include camera control and imaging software supported with Matlab or phyton.

The Chronos 1.4 serves a REST API, a unicast RTSP video stream, and also some CGI scripts for purposes such as retrieving a jpeg of the current live view or video files saved to mounted storage devices. For more information: https://www.krontech.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Network-Control-v0.6.5-1.pdf

Here is a repository with Matlab & Python scripts for controlling the Chronos 1.4: https://github.com/krontech/chronos-examples

What's the resolution to get to around 40,000 fps with the 2.1?

Here are a few settings the Chronos 2.1 can achieve near 40,000fps

HResVResFPS
19202040496.8
12803237745.3
10243839787.8
8005239745.6

Hi,

I'm having difficulty connecting to network storage that I have setup on my Windows 10 device. These are the basic steps I have followed.

1. Assign IP address on laptop ethernet network card to 192.168.1.1 with netmask 255.255.255.0
2. Assign IP address on Chronos camera to 192.168.1.2 with netmask 255.255.255.0
3. Set "Unidentified Network" to private (it defaults to public network).
4. Create folder to be shared.
5. Right Click-> Properties -> Sharing and share to user. This outputs my Network path of \\compute1\\Chronos_Footage
6. I then go into the Chronos 1.4 camera and go to SMB Share and set SMB Share to 192.168.1.1/Chronos_Footage/

I get the error "is not reachable!".

I'm not sure what is going on here and any help will be greatly appreciated. I think the guide to connect to a Windows Network Drive might be out of date as well?

Thank you,
Dustin

I think Windows 10 defaults to a version of SMB greater than 1.0, which isn't supported by the latest 0.7 firmware.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/file-server/troubleshoot/detect-enable-and-disable-smbv1-v2-v3

I ran into a similar issue with my NAS which uses SMBv3 and had to SSH into the camera to get the service logs for more troubleshooting clues.

When I purchased my 2.1, it was under the expectation that the camera would be able to reach 100,000 FPS per advertising on Kron Technologies website.  To my knowledge (and please correct me if I am wrong), the limit for this camera is still around 24,000 FPS.  Is there a way to increase the FPS even if it is an unadvertised method.

@rdemyan yes, it is possible. Take a look through this thread for instructions:
https://forum.krontech.ca/index.php?topic=661.0

I was able to configure my 2.1 to support 114,504fps at 832x8 resolution, and 85,324fps at 832x16 resolution. Technically the h.264 encoder works, however I suspect saving in one of the other formats would yield better results for unusual resolutions.

Software Dev / Re: Will there ever be a 100,000 FPS version again?
« on: December 13, 2023, 06:20:29 PM »
Actually, the following code for step #6 from the instructions @sanjay posted is better, because it will only use the vertical resolution when it is less than 64.

nano pychronos/pychronos/sensors/lux2100.py
     change MIN_VRES = 96 to MIN_VRES = 8 on line 37
     change
     numRows = 64
     fSize = self.getCurrentGeometry()

to
     fSize = self.getCurrentGeometry()
     numRows = min(64, fSize.vRes)

on line 656
save and exit the file with Ctrl + O then Ctrl + X

One other minor issue I found is there might be a strange horizontal dot pattern at the bottom of the image if you press the 'Max' button for the framerate on the back of the camera while using an unsupported resolution. Try setting the framerate to something lower, and the dots should go away with a black calibration. Then return to the recording settings menu and press the 'Max' button for the framerate. The dots should go away for that setting as well with this second black calibration.

Software Dev / Re: Will there ever be a 100,000 FPS version again?
« on: December 12, 2023, 07:28:09 PM »
I have the color model of the Chronos 2.1 and the fastest framerate I was able to configure it to calibrate & record was 114,504fps at 800x8 resolution, which would be 3,816.8x slow motion with a 30fps playback. These numbers seem to deviate from the specs on the Luxima website. For example, the maximum framerate at 1920x8 resolution reported by the camera is 73242.2fps, however the Luxima website states 125,000 FPS @ 1920 x 8

The configuration process is not very hard or time consuming. Simply follow the steps @sanjay described earlier in this thread, except for Step #6, use the following instead:

nano pychronos/pychronos/sensors/lux2100.py
     change MIN_VRES = 96 to MIN_VRES = 8 on line 32
     change numRows = 64 to numRows = 16 on line 652
save and exit the file with Ctrl + O then Ctrl + X

Furthermore, it may be of interest to modify the /var/camera/resolutions file as @mklinger mentioned. For both the 2.1 and 1.4, that's used for populating the presets drow-down menu and the list of resolutions which the "Black Calibrate All Resolutions" button triggers calibration data to be created for

Chronos User Discussion / Re: NEW: Chronos 4K12 and Chronos Q12
« on: December 08, 2023, 12:49:36 PM »
Thanks Sanjay! Is there a reason why the 1.4 and 2.1 can't allow for adjustable bit depth? Is it a sensor thing?

The bit depth limitations are dictated by the sensor. Both the Chronos 1.4 & Chronos 2.1 image sensors only provide 12-bit analog to digital converters:

Chronos 1.4: https://www.luxima.com/product_briefs/LUX1310.html
Chronos 2.1: https://www.luxima.com/product_briefs/LUX2100.html

The Chronos 4K12 uses a GSprint 4510 image sensor, which provides support for 12, 10, and 8 bits per pixel
