Hi,
I'm thinking about doing some longer filming without being plugged in a wall outlet at an event.
So my idea is to build/modify/use a big battery pack.
This creates the question:
Is it better (from an efficiency standpoint) to power the camera via 12V on the battery port with a dummy battery or via the 17-20V input?
Having a portable battery bank to generate 220V AC and converting down to 19V is the worst way, that's for sure.

Hello,
It would be most efficient to power the camera via a dummy battery, the camera's power system architecture is designed to be most efficient when running off the battery, since that's when efficiency matters most. The 17-20V DC input will draw approximately 5-10% more power than would be drawn from the battery under the same operating conditions.
From a reliability and convenience point of view, the 17-20V DC input is better protected and will be much more elegant to connect to than using a dummy battery. Additionally, you can leave the camera's internal battery installed while using an external battery on the 17-20V input. For an external battery smaller than about 300Wh, this would get you more total runtime than connecting a battery of equivalent capacity to a dummy battery.
