Chronos User Discussion / Re: Review of Chronos 2.1
« on: November 29, 2020, 07:21:38 AM »
Today I encountered a very strong camera freeze when shooting two frames in a row and only restarting the camera helped.
1. I started recording and at the end I press stop, the camera just freezes and I can’t do anything (there were no ssd and flash drives in the camera)
2. I installed ssd in the camera, turn it on, shoot the frame - stop recording - press save, it gives an error (Recording Failed: Operation not permitted) after that the camera freezes and only reboot helps

As a result, we get 2 bad attempts, and these attempts could be very expensive.
Developers tell me what to do and how to deal with it ???

Had my 2.1 also freeze a bunch of times now, but it usually was when Inserting an SD Card While Playback from RAM was running or when inserting an SD while the Camera was booting up. Guess it just dont likes that. The Bootup one i understand, propably messes something up in the Boot Routine of the Camera when Devices are Changed during Boot (also propably not much can be done about this, because this is most likely Hardware problem, like some older PCs also dont like it when you mess with devices During boot). Not sure what is going on with the Playback ones though. Also the Boot -freezes are not too bad, but the Ones where it freezes while Playback is running are really bad, cause it usually means the User has shot something worth saving and is about to do that, but now has to force a power down and will loose the Footage he just shot. I was able to easily reshoot everything i lost from those Freezes, but those could lead to more Serious losses elswhere. Since then i just always closed the Playback Screen into the Normal Home/ Recording Screen and inserted The SD then, then gone back to Playback Screen to Save and didnt have any Freeze again so far.

This Short bit of footage here is a bit of an crossover from that topic here:
 https://forum.krontech.ca/index.php?topic=614.0
It is shot without the internal IR-/UV- Filter glass, which makes the Image somewhat more soft, but noticeable brighter in some situations. This was shot as kind of a test to push the Cameras to its limits on Low-Light. Shot at 46fps; 359°; 18+6dB; f/0,95 50mm Schneider Kreuznach Lens wide open.

A image Quality test of my 0,64x Metabones i did a while ago, but just noticed i havent posted here, so i might as well share it. Lens used should have been an Nikon AF 70-300mm, but not too sure about that anymore.

Finally got myself some propper LED-Lights and did a quick test with them today. 2142fps @146° ; 0dB analog 6dB digital Gain (Had set the Digital Gain to 6dB for a previous shot, and didnt double check again, cause i usually dont change that setting, so because of that, there is some faint noise there), f/16. Lens used was an 12,5mm f/1.3 Avenir.

Found the Post about the new upcoming Software update again, which i was talking about in my first reply:

well, to be fair here, even if they made it No.1 Priority (or if it even was right now), it would probaply still take a considerable Amount of time to Release an Update.
Because you obviously need to change *something* in the Current Version of the Software, but the last thing you want is to make things worse with whatever you are changing, so you need to do tons of testing to make sure that everything still works as bevore, and whatever you changed actually made things better. Now from my own testing of all that Gain Settings and Combinations, even just to "test" that took an entire evening of work (Current  Chronos Full Presets Gain Test Any% WR if i actually had looked at the Time whenever i started...), and for bug testing you would want to do way more tests like that for a whole lot of different Settings, for example Recording and Saving at those Resolutions/ Frameratest. What i did was just a short check if the given Setting even showed an Image on the Screen itself, nothing else. And lot of those tests should be run multiple times to make sure its reliable....
Given that they also dont really have an Army of Workforce to throw at such a task, release of an Update will take a while, even if they tried really hard, just look at the Last few Updates.
I dont really think its cause they dont care, are lazy or just want to annoy people, more like an serious Lack of Manpower to release faster. For propper Testing of an final, stable Update alone i would expect like two weeks or more, even if you had two or even three people working full-time Workhours just running bug tests and stuff. And bevore testing could happen you would first need to find out, what the Problem Even was in the First place in the current Version of the Software, and then find yourself a way to Work around that problem.
 .
If its really urgent, maybe try to call them or contact them via mail, for example their support/ Service Mail adress, maybe they allready have some kind of "beta" version of an update they could provide you, which isnt currently released yet and just for Internal Testing. For Critical work i would however for sure wait for the final Release, because such early software could have even more/ worse bugs or other Problems than the current version oft software, including total chrash of the camera, random data Loss, unuseable /weird Footage Output ect. (but could also allready be very useable)

See also this topic, where this has allready been discussed in detail:

I cant find where that was, but i am pretty sure i heard someone from Krontech say, that they are working on an Firmware-Update for the Camera to solve this problem and also improove on the Noise in general.

Quick Update:
Finally got around to making another one, which is now to size for the Critical Dimensions. Kind of messed up again, the 2.0mm Drill i used to predrill the Holes broke on the Second Hole, so i had to mill it out with an Carbide endmill, and the Hole ended up about 0.4mm oversized in Diameter. But since this is just a Clearance Hole for an M3 Screw, its no problem.
 .
I also got myself a bunch of pretty fancy Carbide endmills and was able to improove the Surface Finish on the Contact surfaces by quite a bit. its now about as Close to an Mirror Finish as i will be able to get on my old Manual Mill.

A small Clarification here, since Bian asked me, if i can also upload the STL file for the Print:
If i didnt put it clear enough in the Original Post, here again, I did not make this, this is a Design by the Forum user "likevvii". This is also not my Camera, images and STL file are made by him, not me.
He just came and asked me about a bunch of details and Dimensions, on how to make such an Adapter, and i Sent him A very rough Sketch for one and provided Some Measurements with it, he then went ahead and made the Adapter shown here, a very Clean and Beautifull Design that should hold up reasonable well for light average use (for rough Production Environment/ industry/ Very Heavy lenses or all other Heavy use i would still highly reccomend to use some kind of Metal Adapter).
About a Week later i asked him, how his Adapter was working out for him, and he sent me above Images and STL-File, but couldnt upload to the Forum (Had similar Problems in the Past at random times also sometimes myself), and told me i can Upload them if i want, so i did, since this seems very worth sharing with the World, finally an propper MFT-Adapter Design that is affordable/ Finally a way to mount an Speedbooster for those who want that.
STL File for the Print is also Uploaded in the Original Post above, maybe a bit hard to see, because there is images uploaded also. Its 3 Images and 1 STL-file.

So finally here it is: MFT-Mount for The Chronos.
I designed one way back in early 2018, a pretty crude one.  https://forum.krontech.ca/index.php?topic=123.msg1205#msg1205
 .
Now The user likevvii made an very useable Design with some Input from me, he wrote:

Here is the file if you want to post it on the forums. Forums doesnt let me upload the image so I have to use my own upload website. I dont have a reliable upload site so it is better if I didnt post it since it may get deleted in the future.

It was designed specifically to be resin printed.

  .
Is made especially for the 2.1, but should work on an 1.4 as well.
Metall MFT-Mount from here is mounted onto the Resin Print:

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Infrared Footage
« on: November 19, 2020, 01:20:49 PM »
Here is an pretty extreme one, Soldering Iron. This time 60fps/ 359°/ 12dB; all Shot at full f/0,95 and Exposure Boosted a ton in post, hence the Harsh noise, but keep in mind that is some Serious Low Light stuff....
 .
Again IR-Only / IR+Vis/ Vis-Only;  Same Filters as for the First test.

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Chronos 2.1 max operating temperature?
« on: November 19, 2020, 12:34:58 PM »
I would recommend a maximum ambient temperature of 40C. You can check the internal temperature on the About tab in the Util window, as long as the System and Image Sensor temperatures stay under about 70C you should be fine.

The camera has over-temperature protection, it will simply turn off if it gets too hot, but the image quality will degrade slightly while it's hot. The warmer the sensor, the higher the image noise. This isn't permanent, it will go back to normal when it cools down.

David
Hi, what is the temperature at which the Camera actually will turn off (Sensor/System Temerature Reading, i am Trying to do some Noise Testing at various Temperatures, 100°C?)?
Also, how much power-Draw can the Internal Fan Controler Handle? Trying to fit an 40x40x28mm Server Fan, that will Draw 0,4A @12V. Is it save to connect that Fan for Temperature Testing Purposes, or will it possibly damage anything on the Mainboard from the higher Power draw?

Okay, thanks, so nothing really special about the sensor compared to a dslr. Good to know about the protective glass.

Since I haven't looked into my Chronos I wonder how the active cooling is involved in sucking in dust. I assume the sensor is completely protected from cooling air?

Thanks! Martin.
"protective" Glass (actually Hot Mirror):

Not strictly 2.1 Footage, but the Startup-Animation of the 2.1 captured at 400fps/ 29fps Playback, just in case someone was also wondering what that Short little flash in the Middle there Was...
