Chronos User Discussion / Re: Synced Chronos 2.1 only records 79 frames
« on: January 27, 2022, 01:48:26 AM »
Thanks very much for these replies Nikon.

I'm rather reluctant to try new sync methods right now given that there is already a bug in the software that appears to have got progressively worse with time, but I will definitely try the other methods if I don't hear from Krontech soon (going on 10 days now after three emails about this).

Unfortunately there isn't enough light in the study I'm running to bring the gain settings down to 0db, but I will certainly play around with different combinations of the analog and digital gain settings given that you've also experienced issues with this in the past. Were there any other settings except for 0db that worked? It's really time consuming to test this given that the issue isn't consistent, so I can run multiple trials before it starts happening again.... so any pointers of what you've already tried would be massively appreciated! Thanks so much for the info and thoughts!

Thanks Nikon. I've just edited the post to include these as JPEGs. I've got a Mac and tried to upload images straight from my Photos app, hence the weird file format!

There's a couple of ways to sync these apparently, but the analog BNC connectors are supposedly ideal to keep frame numbers fully synced. I'll certainly look into other methods if all else fails! The frames don't necessarily need to be exactly synced since I could just use a camera flash or something similar to calibrate the time lag post-recording, but it would be ideal to not worry about this kind of thing!

Chronos User Discussion / Synced Chronos 2.1 only records 79 frames

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone on here might be able to offer some help on a weird issue/bug. I have tried Kron (with repeated emails now) but have not heard anything back from their support team.

I am getting a weird issue where the source camera on two BNC synced Chronos 2.1 sometimes only records 79 frames when I take a recording in 'Toggle' mode (i.e. after triggering the shutter for a second time). The second camera has so far always seemed to record for the full 11 seconds. I leave the cameras on continuous buffer for around 5 minutes before I need to save the pre-recorded 11 seconds of footage.

I cannot find a sensible reason for why the cameras are behaving like this; immediately after it happens (i.e. after a barrage of expletives because I have just lost some critical and irreplaceable footage that is a culmination of months of work), I have tried triggering the shutter again and can get a full 11 seconds of footage immediately afterwards, so it seems completely random for when it occurs, but is usually around 70% of recordings.

I’ve attached two photos of the trigger and record settings with this in case it helps.

This is part of a really expensive and time-sensitive experiment, so this is getting a bit desperate now and Kron do not appear particularly bothered to help.

If anyone can offer any advice I would be eternally grateful!

Thank you,
Rob

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Wide angle lens for 2.1
« on: November 26, 2021, 04:29:04 AM »
Hi Nikon,

I'm also interested in the answer to this question.

Do you happen to also have a list of wide angle lenses for the Chronos 2.1 (i.e. the 4/3" format sensor)? Your list is only for the 2/3", so there would be vignetting in all of those lenses.

I found that good wide angle lenses are really hard to find for the Chronos 2.1. I ended up using a Sony-compatible E-mount lens (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BHQRTZ9/ref=pe_27063361_485629781_TE_item?th=1) and then designing and 3D printing an E-mount to C-mount adaptor, which also required adjusting the flange focal distance on the camera (super easy to do with the Chronos) since the E-mount lenses don't allow much space. Would be good to have an out-of-the-box option!

Cheers,
Rob

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Fastest saving method
« on: November 03, 2021, 03:44:57 AM »
Hi Nikon,

Thanks very much for this really in-depth reply. It's massively appreciated. I think you're right..... there aren't any external saving methods that will allow me to save more than the 11 seconds of internal memory over a five minute period. Thank you very much for suggesting the Segmented recording mode: I hadn't got to that part of the manual yet, and this will be enormously helpful for this project! I'll look into writing some Python scripts for setting the correct interval between these, but for the first part of the project that won't be necessary as just a manual triggering will be fine.

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers,
Rob

Chronos User Discussion / Fastest saving method
« on: November 02, 2021, 02:28:32 AM »
Hi all,

I'm a researcher, and would like to start using a Chronos 2.1 (32GB) to take as many two second clips as possible within a five minute timeframe (in HD and 1000fps). For those interested, the project is on fish evasive behaviour.

I'm not yet familiar at all with the Chronos cameras, so I was hoping someone might be able to make some suggestions about the best to do this. After reading the documentation, transferring to an external eSATA SSD drive seems to be amongst the best, but would this still be quicker than transferring  to a quick computer (2020 Macbook with M1 chip) and writing data to the SSD using a high speed HDMI cable? Obviously I could just try out different methods once I get my camera, but I need to create the experimental setup first, and the manner of saving data will affect the design of this.

Any other suggestions would be massively appreciated!

Cheers,
Rob
