Title: What Lights Do You Use?
Post by: lwaters on January 29, 2021, 05:34:10 AM
I know there is an old thread about lighting but i'm not finding definitive answers.
What lights are you most successful with? We have been using 1000W halogen's but they are too hot for our temperature sensitive subject.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

I'm using an Apurture LS-C300d/II, It's an LED so I have no idea how that compares to halogen lights, but it's very bright! I hear that the new Amaran 200D is even brighter and quite a lot cheaper, if not as solidly built.

There are some (not many) LED work lights that you can find in hardware stores that have smoothly powered LEDs.

I have Godox VL300 300w LED Lights with Neewer Fresnel 2X Lenses if I need them. They do get quite hot but give a lot of light, they not as hot as incandescent lights though, If they re all on 100% I have to wear eye protection.

I have a pair of Godox VL300 300W LEDs and Aputure Fresnel 2x attachments.  I also have a Nitecore TM28 6000 lm flashlight that I have experimented with as well.

Has anyone played with any of the super bright LED flashlights for high speed work?  Something like the 100,000 lm IMALENT MS18?  Its extreme output is brief (< 1 min), but that might enough for Chronos recording.

I have been filming with the:

Nanlight Forza 500
Nanlight Forza 60
Aputure 120D

They work really well, no flicker and ok output for the price.

For Higspeed i mostly use My two Godox VL300. So far i dont have any Light modifiers or Lenses For them, but hope to get some Soon.Havent really used any of my other Lights much with the Chronos so far, apart from my two Dörr DLP820 V2 Lamps. Looking forward to buying a bunch of Godox SL200 in the Near Future. Really Like the VL300´s, not just for Higspeed, but they are also great for general Filmmaking purposes. They are great to have, and its also really nice that you can run them from V-Mount Batteries if you need to, but the SL200 are propably one of the best available options in terms of amount of Light for the Money you get with them. I assume Most People would use something Like those Single-Chip High-Power LED-Lamps like those Godox Lamps i talked about (or Sunlight If you can), multiple Brands Make similar Lamps with different Features and Power Output.

I totally get what you mean about the struggle to find the perfect lighting for temperature-sensitive subjects. I've been there too, and it's not easy. In my experience, 1000W halogens can definitely be too hot for the job. Have you considered switching to LEDs? I recently found a great LED wall washer flood spot light from https://ledmontreal.com/led-wall-washer-flood-spot-lights/ that has been a game-changer for me. It produces very little heat and provides great lighting for my temperature-sensitive projects.

I use an Immanent DX80 32,000 Lumen LED flashlight for portable lighting. I tested it at my friend's work, Illumn.com, and it does not flicker.

Based on my experience and the feedback of many photographers, LED lights have proven to be the most successful lighting solution, offering a balance between adequate illumination and minimal heat output for temperature-sensitive subjects.
