Chronos User Discussion / Re: FFPMEG: Fastest conversion of DNG to MP4
« on: November 08, 2020, 02:30:43 PM »
Yes, that's true. I have a NVIDIA Quattro 4000 installed, and both Adobe Bridge and Lightroom Classic CC cannot use the GPU for Image processing but only for image displaying.

I'll check if I need a new graphics card. However, AE ist not that good for automated processing. AERENDER is too clumsy, imho.
Also i dont work with Resolve, but that could be quite a bit faster than AE and the Other Adobe stuff for this. Havent really worked with Resolve, since i just like AE better, but there are quite a few people even here on the Forum, that prefer Resolve, so maybe one of the Resolve-Users can share some Rendertimes for DNG?
Also, depending on whatever CPU you are running, it might make sense to upgrade that first. I would go for a CPU with a fairly high Clockspeed and Single-Core-Performance, since even today not all software can make best use of a lot of cores/threads on an CPU, so having a bunch of fast ones is most of the time better for editing than Having a ton of rather slow ones (for most software). Just looked up the Quattro 4000, and it actually seems a bit old, but i would reccomend to look up the Support for GPU accelrated DNG-Conversion /-Processing (also support for the Particular GPU you think about upgrading to...) bevore blowing a load of money into an expensive GPU, for the Adobe Software stuff it might not be worth it for just DNG, since it might not even make it any faster, CPU Upgrade might be better here. For software that can actually make good use of a powerfull GPU for this, its propably worth to upgrade the GPU, as long as the rest of the System can keep up with it (Memory speed and Bandwith, both RAM and HDD/SSD, CPU, ect.)

Have you tried Premiere Pro CC?

Interresting would be if someone had an very recent GPU and the Latest CC Version of AE, since i think the older Versions are not that well optimised for GPU use or even just heavy Multicore CPU use. And CS6 is allready pretty old software by now, Hardware has changed a lot since. i guess just propperly using the GPU for this will gain a lot of speed, and dont think AE CS6 does use it well for stuff like that, if at all. if i recall correctly AE CS6 does basically just use GPU for 3D Calcualtions for some Plugins and Shading and stuff. But i dont really have the Hardware or software to test this... What version of AE are you running CS6/older or CC?
 .
#EDIT: Just tried the same render i did with AE CS6 bevore, the 100 Frames, with The old AE 7.0 aka AE CS2. Render did take 61 Seconds for the 100 frames @ h.264 Quicktime (.mov, only option for h.264 Compression inside AE CS6) @8MBps. Running on the Same Hardware, but with even way older Software with even worse Multicore suport, and propably no GPU support for stuff like that at all. So the Recent CC AE on Powerfull New Hardware should run quite a bit faster i assume.

I just did an quick test with my usual setup, assuming you mean Full Resolution 2.1 DNG-Files.
I used My Adobe After Effects CS6, running on even older Hardware, an 4 Core i7 (i7-4720HQ+GTX960M, Laptop), though i dont really know how much After Effects used the GPU for this operation. I put a 100 DNG-Frame Sequence in, didnt change anything on them, no effects added, no denoise, nothing, just the DNG with untouched Settings, exporting as h.264 with a Setting of 8 MBps Bitrate. Did take 31 Seconds to finish the Render for the 100 Frames, so should be around 3,2fps export speed. Gets quite a bit slower if denoising and or sharpening is added, Whitebalance and general Color adjustments seem to slow it down a bit, but by far not as much as denoise and Sharpening.
Isnt really that fast, but Image Quality is very good from the Internal Adobe Camera Raw Converter.
 .
#EDIT: Also, should say, will propably run quite a bit faster on more Recent hardware with the Newest CC Version of After Effects, would at least expect somewhere between 10-30fps or even more on an fast CPU/ GPU combination

The Bottleneck is propably not the SD-Card, its internal processing power to put out the Data.

Software Dev / Re: Chronos V0.5.0 Full Release
« on: November 06, 2020, 08:01:18 PM »
I need to spend some time trying to reproduce this, as of now it is unpredictable.

I have had my Chronos 1.4 'overshoot' the end point when saving h.264 videos. I mark my start and end points and the save begins as expected but passes the end mark. The touchscreen then becomes unresponsive, the "abort save" button does not respond nor do any touches in on any other part of the screen. All that I can do after that is to restart.

I had it happen 3 times out of ~20 videos that I shot today, I have not run an online update since the summer (maybe a month after v0.5.0 was released) so I will try that and see if I experience the same.

If I ssh in, is there a way to get debug info on what is going on, or manually unlock-up the UI? Just curious, thanks.
I tried to do some Single-Frame Saves (or to just save a very small number of frames) in the past an noticed that too. Seems to always save a bunch more than Selected, but havent figured out whats happening there Exactly....
#EDIT#: forgot to say, but for me thats on my 2.1

[...] and add a new external storage file browser feature, so that you can see what has been saved to storage (and delete it if necessary). Development is almost done and we're about to start our test/QA procedure for this release, but here's a preview of the file browser screen:

Suggestions on what can be improved in software is always welcome. I think the best place for that would be in the Software Dev board under whichever software release thread that your feedback applies to (probably 0.5.0 at this point).
This is great, have been waiting for some kind of file browser, thanks for adding that.

on this flange focal distance drawing you can see a cross-Section of the Heatsink, its just in between the Circut boards there. There isnt really that much space, sadly...
 https://www.krontech.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Flange-Focal-Distance-Chronos-2.1-HD.pdf

579
Peltier module coupled to the heat sink  8) ?
Also had that idea, but there isnt really space for that, sadly.Backside of the Heatsink will cool the Main processor, front side of the Heatsink block will cool the Sensor (the 9x12,5mm Surface and the Pad), so there is 4mm of space in between there, and Heat coming from both sides, so peltier wouldnt really work. Best thing you could do is propably Heatpipes and attatch some more beefy cooling solution elsewhere, somewhere where more space is inside there. But Heatpipes are quite a bit of effort, and i never messed around with custom heatpipe Cooling untill now. Copper i can do...
Also allready thought about Making it better and adding More surface area to have contact with the Moving air or even Water cooling, but that will add a ton of work...

580
Has anyone yet messed around with the Cooling solution on the Sensor? 1.4 or 2.1?
I am currently thinking about Replacing the Stock Aluminum Sensor Heatsink with Copper on my 2.1, which should allow for noticeable better Cooling performance on the Sensor itself.
Would be interresting to see if that would help with noise.
Allready took all the needed Measurements for the Heatsink block today, and also managed to get some 30x10 Copper Bar Stock.
So, anyone got any ideas about this whole thing? Things to test to figure out performance differences or details to keep in mind for a project like this?
If anyone from the Krontech team, who has access to the Blueprints and actuall Measurements could confirm if my measurements are about correct, would be also very nice.

@chrissie_c: Thanks for that link, read that topic, when it was new, but completely forgot it existed. This is the absolutely same issue you got back then.
 .
 .
 I also found this:
 https://forum.krontech.ca/index.php?topic=559.0
This old topic is about some issues one user got with clipping also. This, and the reason behind those lines, tesla500 explained there should also cause all of the cases of Overexposed areas showing various amounts of Line patterns. I think this maybe can be solved with some kind of more advanced Look-Up-Tables inside the camera, allowing for those inconsistent values coming from the sensor, but remapping them to values more accurate to the real world, while beeing aware that this will change a lot with gain, framerate, and Temperature. I dont know how, but it should be possible to be done. maybe not only a Black-Calibration, but also a (optional) Grey- and White-Calibration should provide enough data for This, to improove Image Quality significantly, avoiding having to Hard-Code it into the Firmware for every possible Combination of settings. Fixing this issue with the Vertical Lines and generally very visible Fixed pattern noise in the Overexposed Areas at some resolutions, should also improove overall image-Quality by quite a bit, if done propperly. Because most Noise currently visible is actually those Lines and Fixed Pattern noise, which seems strangely similar to that from the Overexposed Areas in my tests, so the Most of the other Lines and Noise is also most likely caused by the same or similar problems with readout timing or propper remapping of Pixel Brightness values.
 .
As far as the Resolution/ Framerate/ Gain Combinations go, which arent working AT ALL currently, which are basicaly all gain settings over 12dB analog Gain at 1024px Horizontal Resolution and all Gain Settings over 6dB Analog Gain for resolutions of 800px Horizontal or smaller, basically forcing you to use 0dB Gain (6dB (and 12dB for 1024px) is working and kinda useable, but image Quality is mostly pretty bad because of those Lines explained above) at the Highest framerates, demanding crazy amounts of light for those usecases. Since this is now obviously no faulty unit on my end, but an Bug in Firmware as it seems right now, this should really be fixed. Would really be great to have higher Sensitivity Options for High Framerate stuff.

582
I did a few tests based on your table and get same results at higher gains.
Thanks a lot for your tests!

584
I was just Testing a bunch of gain settings to try to figure out a good and propperly reproduceable way of comparing Noise performance on the Chronos 2.1 for a possible personal future Project, comparing Noise vs Sensor Temperature with different Cooling on the Sensor.
While i did that, i came across a bunch of Gain Settings, that wherent working at all. So i decided to just test them all. For the Sake of time and my sanity, i limited myself to test just the Preset Resolutions at Max. framerate and maximal exposure time. Full list of the Test Results is attached as Excel List, small part of the list is also posted as screenshot. Testing setup was as follows: Resolution was picked, Black Calibration was done for every single Setting, for the ones that Failed i did at least two to 5 Tries at a Black-Calibration. Result was then written down. All testing was performed after allowing the camera to warm up for more than an hour, and the Camera was pluged into the Power adapter the whole duration of the Testing. This is not an test about image Quality, just to see if its even working at all, and surprisingly many of the Gain-Resolution-Framerate Combinations (especially High framerates + High gain, which would be really, really good to have for stuff that doesnt need to look particularly good, but you have to see them Anyways and dont have a ton of light to work with for some Reason) from the Presets wont work.
 .
So now, after seeing those results, i wonder, if this is just some mistake on my side (results are VERY reproduceable on my camera, so i doubt that), something wrong with my unit, or an Actuall Bug in firmware. Can someone Confirm the results i got from my test on his camera? please also post if you get completely different results, or have to add any weird bugs like this to this List. I guess there are many more settings which are pretty glitchy, but i think the Preset ones are propably the most used ones, and because of that the most important. Also noticed there are about as many Bugs for Really low framerates and some Custom Resolutions, but didnt want to also test that today, if i do any more Testing like this, i will propably also post it here or start another thread, if its too much off topic to be included here.
 .
#EDIT: Removed the Partial Screenshot from the List and Replaced it with an Screenshot of the Complete List. Screenshot is a bit broken at the bottom, Excel seems to not like huge resolution Monitor setups, but should still be readable.
 .
#EDIT: My Browser also freaks out when trying to display that long image, and wont display it completely, so maybe just download it to view it, if your Browser wont display that correctly also, or look at the Excel file.

Chronos User Discussion / Re: usefull accessories
« on: October 27, 2020, 08:00:16 AM »
Depends on what you will use your camera for, but i would reccomend to make sure you have enough batteries or an other way of powering it (Those nikon Batteries last from about 45 min to 1Hour 15Min, so if you plan to shoot for extended time, Batteries will run out surprisingly quickly, unless you use it on an power adapter all the time for example for Studio use.), and also enough Storage. The SD-Card can handle quite a bit of .mp4 footage, but if you end up saving as DNG, it will fill up in no time, so a bunch of big spare SD-Cards, USB-Memory or an SSD (SSD will need a special cable to use it) to store all your footage.
Also depending on the Lenses you plan on using on there, Adapters might also be a thing to think about.
And something that will also improove overall experience, if used for Filmmaking purposes, is an Good External Monitor, which will allow you to judge exposure / Color better and can be viewed from any direction.
Trigger cables can be usefull, especially if your camera is in an location where it is impossible to trigger it without, for example general danger or Distance in Multi-Camera-Setups, but are not crucial for general use.
Apart from accessories for the camera itself, i would make sure to be able to light up whatever i am trying to shoot bright enough. The amount of Light needed for Filming Highspeed is easily underestimated! So one of the most important things to get when buying a highspeed Camera is actually lights.
