Chronos User Discussion / Re: How Long Does Black Calibration Take?
« on: June 12, 2017, 04:58:24 PM »
I received my camera today and I'm current performing a black calibration. The message "Performing black calibration. Please wait." has been displayed well over an hour. I have a feeling something is wrong.

I have the lens cap in place.

I'm using a SanDisk 8GB (class 10) SD card, formatted as FAT32.

What's the longest time I should expect a black calibration to take?

That's definitely gotten stuck in some way, it should take about 15-20 seconds or so. Restart the camera and try again.

What resolution/frame rate did you have the camera set to? I'll try to reproduce the problem here.

You can find some original files straight off the camera at the following link, the ones beginning with "vid_".

True RAW saving isn't supported yet, but that's coming soon. The main barrier is slow CPU access to the uncompressed video, the fast video pipeline is H264 encoder only at the moment.

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Spotting
« on: June 07, 2017, 05:09:06 PM »
Hey Critters,

That's a calibration issue, we have contacted Luxima, the image sensor manufacturer, and they suggested adding 3-point calibration to fix the issue. We're currently using 2-point calibration. This is high priority on the list of things to fix.

Basically, due to variations in the semiconductor production process, some pixels have a response that is non-linear, with slightly less response when dark compared to in brighter light. As a result, they need more gain applied, but only in dark areas. The 3-point calibration will do this.

To minimize this for now, try to avoid using analog gain as the problem is worse at higher gain, and expose your images as bright as possible to bring up the pixel levels. Applying gain afterwards will also make the spots more noticeable.

Software Dev / Re: Initial feedback
« on: May 31, 2017, 09:00:57 PM »
Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming!

  • UI on left option should be easy to do.
  • I've had requests to be able to enable/disable confirmation for both record over unsaved buffer and black cal, that should be easy too. Probably will have to wait until we have it remembering settings across power cycles to be useful. That's not done yet because if it's done wrong it will be a nightmare to propagate settings over software updates.
  • Manual white balance is coming, in fact the whole color processing pipeline is going to be updated. Right now the color correction matrix is based on a white LED spectrum, with white balance multipliers being applied after that. Proper matrix selection will be added.
  • Focus aid actually used to just zoom in, I changed it last minute to enable the focus peaking. Focus peaking admittedly isn't working that well yet, it's too sensitive yet not sensitive enough in some ways. Would you prefer me to restore that button to zooming in?
  • Once we have the saving of settings done, pretty much everything you can change will be remembered, so if you change the encoding frame rate it will remember that. At the moment the API for the encoder only allows integer frame rates, in the future we'll dig into that and make it support fractional frame rates like 29.97. After all, the encoder doesn't really know the frame rate, that's just metadata that tells it how fast to play back the frames.
  • If your SD card isn't being recognized when you insert it after power on, try a different card. The drivers are sometimes finicky and don't like to recognize some cards depending on the controller the card uses. Sandisk and Lexar cards seem to work fine.
  • One user has reported corrupt files if you eject the card too soon after saving, I havn't been able to duplicate that so far, it may be an issue with his particular card.

Looks great Critters! Thanks for pointing out those LEDs, I didn't know those existed. Are they very loud?

You can use any normally open switch connected to the BNC connector on the camera as a remote trigger.

Ben Krasnow (Applied Science) and I have both successfully used the Pixel TW283 remote trigger. Any variant will work, you won't be using the included cable. You need a 3.5mm male to BNC male adapter to connect it to the camera, this is most easily done with a 3.5mm to RCA cable, followed by a RCA to BNC adapter.

This trigger has one bug, if you mash the shutter button quickly it will miss the press, you need to press the button slowly through its half-pressed state to fully pressed. Other than that it works well. This is a problem with the trigger itself, not the camera.

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Mounting Holes
« on: May 26, 2017, 05:27:23 PM »
Obligatory "FIRST!!". Somehow I managed to create the first ever thread on this forum.

Anyway, does anyone have the dimensions for the mounting holes and threads that were added to the front of the camera? I'll be using it in close proximity to firearms and I'm looking at building a protective case or shield around the front of the camera.  Cheaper to replace a sacrificial piece of acrylic or polycarbonate rather than replace a lens or camera should it be hit with shrapnel or muzzle blast.

Thanks,
Jeff

The front face has M4 holes on a 35x80mm rectangle, with the lens mount at the center. I made up some simple 3D printable shield holders, I've attached the 3D model to this post. Here's a picture of how they're used.

CAD model and drawings coming soon

Moderator, is it ok to post videos in this forum? Or will you add a sub-forum for this purpose?

Here's another one. frame rates used are 4300, 5900 and 10200. Image quality is still great.

The manual lens is awesome as it allows focus and aperture adjustment on the fly. As the wasp flew back and forth inside the container I had to adjust the focus, even though it was on ly 6" deep. I could not do this on the Sony RX10-ii I used before this.

Awesome work, Kron Tech, I still can't believe how incredible this camera is.

Great shots! Go right ahead, use this board for now, if we get a lot of demo shots we'll add another board for them.
