Yes it does.

It almost seems as though the black cal. setting is being forgotten some time after setting it.

I just did a black cal and left the camera on (not recording) and when I came back 5 minutes later the horizontal band had appeared again.

Yes, a couple of times.

It seems like an age on the videos doesn't it? Just goes to show how important technique is when shooting one of those black powder guns!

Finally got to a range with all the new lighting I've accumulated since getting the Chronos and here are some initial test results.
There's a horizontal band which I couldn't get rid of on the day, but hopefully we'll find out the reason for it before the next tests.

All of this footage was shot using a Nikon 10-24mm f3.5 DX and Nikon 35mm 1.8 DX prime attached to a Metabones XL Speedbooster using a MFL to C mount adapter made by Aimed Research. Still could have done with more light as it was a dull day and the range was mainly in shadow, so I didn't get much help from the sun!
Shows promise though I think.

Software Dev / Save frame rate defaulting back to 60fps.
« on: February 07, 2018, 04:42:23 AM »
I've set my save FR to 50fps. Yesterday I recorded 17 clips and only 5 of them have saved at 50fps. The majority are at 60fps.

The saving pattern during the day was 9 clips@60fps then 5@50fps then 3@60fps.
I was changing resolutions throughout but didn't touch any of the save settings at any time.
I was saving to both a USB drive and SD card.
Any ideas?

I definitely did a black cal after every change I made and this happened on every clip (about 20) with different resolutions and frame rates. I even turned the camera off and on twice to try and clear it.

Maybe I should have done a proper re-boot, but I thought it had cleared viewing on the built in monitor. Only when I got back and looked at all the clips on a bigger monitor could I see it affected all of them.

I've turned the camera on now and the band is still there, so is there anything you want me to do to try and figure out what's happened and how to avoid it happening in the future?

I got some horizontal banding today while running some tests. It was approx. 1.5 deg C if that makes a difference. I saw the same effect an all clips. Width/relative position of band changed when I changed vertical resolution.

What should I check?

I've taken a look at some test shots and it's very difficult to see what you've described so I'm not going to let it bother me for now.

Hopefully I've now got enough light that the small resolution/high frame rate shots I'm planning will look pretty good...

So probably not worth worrying about? What does 1db of DR equate to roughly in stops?

I've done some tests with static targets and I'm struggling to see a difference between 1280x1024, 1280x800 and 640x386 in terms of image quality when I crop everything to the same centre portion of the frame, so I'm assuming there's going to be a difference when shooting moving subjects?

Nathan at Aimed Research has made a few adapters to achieve this and he very kindly supplied me with one a couple of months ago. I can confirm it works very well with a Metabones Speedbooster and I'm shooting everything through it from now on.

In a few days I should have some nice test footage done using a Metabones XL and Nikon lenses and i'll post some of it in the footage thread so you can see how it looks.

Ah this is interesting. What sort of quality loss is to be expected and is it a linear effect?

i.e. If I am using max. frame rate at every resolution, will the quality be noticeably worse if I change from 1280 x 480 to say 1279 x 480 or will it get steadily worse as I decrease horizontal resolution?

If it's currently in a mode supporting 640 width, does that mean I'll get the same quality if I shoot at 1280 x 480 and crop it to 640 x 480 as i would if I shot it at 640 x 480?

I'm going to do some testing to see how this all works, but will I be able to see the difference in quality if I shoot a static test card or do I need to have a fast moving subject?

Thanks for the info. Don't have a Mac here so might try the virtual machine approach first.

There's no competition at the price point of the Chronos if you need seriously high frame rates ;)

You need to define your requirements better though because those examples you give are all quite different in what they offer.

There will be control possible via Ethernet, but it will come with a future firmware release.

I found a temporary workaround to be to format your drive for Linux ie. ext3.  You just have to install some 3rd party software on mac/windows to read the files off. Another way around might be to partition to the drive into lots of 8gb fat32 segments, which would probably give faster saving, although you'll still get hit with the 4gb file size limit and it'll be a pain to use.  Devs can correct this if I am mistaken.

Hey Dan, I've tried this but couldn't get it to work. I used EaseUS Partition Manager to format a USB stick Ext3, but when I put it in the Chronos it isn't recognised.

Can you reveal what utility you used to format ext3 and also what you use to read the files? I'm using PCs here.
