Chronos User Discussion / Re: Post Chronos 2.1 clips here!
« on: November 29, 2022, 06:33:19 PM »
For all the People still having Trouble wrapping their Head around the Shutter-Angle Topic, here is a Shutter of an Bolex L8 Film Camera in Action.
Working Shutter Angle on that Camera when running at 32fps (which at the Time was Considered Slow Motion) is about 166° Shutter, which was Achieved by a Half Disk literally with whatever desired "Angle of Exposure" Cut out, Spinning around that Visible Rivet between the Lens Mount and the Camera Logo on the Front Plate. Exposing the Film for whatever Fraction of time relating to the Angle Cut out Segment of the Disk.
As this general Concept of Shutter was very Typical for Cameras of that Time, and Produced a fairly distinct Look (Amount of Motion Blur), this ~180° Shutter Angle became the Standard "cinematic Look" that has been Widely used ever since.
Lens Mount on that Camera is D-Mount, The Small Brother of the C-Mount we know from the Chronos.
Shot at 2100fps on the 2.1; 25fps Playback.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. I have some samples of them collapsing at even higher frame rates that I'll post in the near future! : )

Test sample of magination magnets at 800 fps clashing with water and collapsing. Plan to do higher frame rates of this soon. Enhanced and Upscaled with Topaz VEAI. : )

Here’s an interpolation test going from 240 fps to 480 fps. I tested Final Cut Pro’s Optical Flow method, Interlake’s Overcrank (similar to Twixtor), and Topaz VEAI Apollos model. The Apollo model hands down is at another level compared to the two. There are a lot of stretching/tearing and morphing artifacts in Final Cut Pro’s Optical flow and Interlake’s Overcrank method, but are almost completely absent in the Apollo model making it look more natural. Programs like Twixtor were the king of interpolation more than a decade ago, but these new interpolation methods like DAIN, RIFE, and Topaz VEAI's Apollo are taking it up a notch.  Twixtor has always had trouble with subjects passing certain objects, but Topaz VEAI handles this pretty well in this example. I'm aware Davinci has a Speed Warp option, but I don't use Davinci so not sure of the differences between that and the Apollo model. For those that want a little bit more slowmo from their Sony A7S III 240 fps or Chronos 1.4/2.1, I think the Apollo model would be a nice one to test out.

While real frames will always be better when it comes to slow-motion, It will be interesting to see how interpolation methods like these will evolve in the next five to ten years as their machine-learning algorithms better. I find that 2X interpolation is the most I would recommend doing depending on the scene, subject movement, and what frame rate you shot at (the higher the frame rate, the better the interpolation will be) as going above tends to create blurring artifacts. Also, interpolating a one-minute 1080P clip to 2X using Topaz VEAI (non-power saver mode) takes around 36 minutes to complete on my 16” M1 MAX Macbook Pro 32GB RAM system.

Chronos User Discussion / Re: Noisy image from sensor pattern?

review this footage: https://vimeo.com/vimaxmedia/review/717910888/a5967ffdc4

I am fighting with getting a clean image from our Chronos 2.1. This latest clip has 3 Aputure lights, 300X top down (lightbox), Nova P300 key light and C300DII backlight all at 100%. Shutter was at 270° shot at 720fps. This shot is using Canon 70-200 L, but I have shot other clips with 30 -105 Canon Cinema Lens, Canon 50mm 1.2, Canon 24-70L and Sigma 24-70 2.8 all with similar results.

I always get this noise pattern in the image. Black calibration has zero effect. Not happy with the Chroma noise either but I could live with it. Its just annoying that my cellphone gets a cleaner image at 900 fps than this camera with good glass. Please tell me I am just doing something wrong or missing a setup step.

What phone do you have that does 900 fps? Huawei Mate 30 Pro or Huawei P40 Pro?

Birds are probably my favorite things to slowmo. Were you using 180 degree shutter?

That's why I held off buying the 2.1 for now. Wondering if the 100,000 fps mode will be added in the future.

@BHV how are you filming at 700fps? I thought the 1.4 can only film as low as 1057 FPS?

Yeah, you can set the fps to any fps you want. I'll shoot at a lower fps to get more light.

Squirrel shaking his head while feeding on seed at 700 FPS shot through a window. I used 700 fps as it was quite dark and cloudy as going to 1500 FPS would've had a lot more noise. Recorded with a Navitar 75mm 1.3 lens in Cinema DNG, upscaled via Topaz VEAI to 1440P and converted to HDR for Youtube. If you can, play back in HDR as it playa back at a higher bitrate with less banding.

Thanks mklinger! Yeah, I don’t know if this is an issue with the 1.4, but I believe if you try to change your white balance in post too far, it can get real strange as if it’s not really a RAW file. You really need to get the 1.4 balance as spot on as you can even when shooting RAW. Is this something the 2.1 exhibits as well when pushing the white balance in post?

Here is a very short Chronos 1.4 RAW DNG Test I did under cloudy conditions graded in Davinci. It was then upscaled to 1440P through Topaz VEAI. I hope Krontech can work with a color scientist and get some LUTS for the 1.4 and 2.1. Also, I was hoping they can add a way for us to fine-tune the white balance manually by having a Kelvin option.

Nice job! What software are you using to import the LUT?
