Got a Schlieren setup that is somewhat portable. Filmed some bullets with the Chronos.

I don’t know who that is but he has a lot of followers.

I analyzed my Schlieren images and noticed shock diamonds in some of them. These were filmed at 32k fps.

I also captured shock diamonds from a suppressor shooting a .30cal plastic bullet. 11gr traveling over 4K feet per sec. Filmed at 40k fps.

I’m real curious to see your Schlieren setup, lens used etc. it’s something I’ve always wanted to try.

Not sure how to post photos but here are some links.

It is thanks to Timo for helping me out. He gently pushed me over the edge to just do it.

I’m using a mirror from a cheap Newton Telescope I bought locally from Facebook Marketplace.

For a lens I am currently using a 7 Artisans 35mm f/0.95 I thought I would need a faster lens for more light gathering. It definitely helps when filming at 32,668 frames per second.

I used a small Surefire handheld light with a fiber optic adapter on the end. The fiber optic wire ended up being too dim for higher frame rates so I just removed it. Plenty of light now. At first I did not use a razor blade but now I do. It helps improves the sensitivity of the Schlieren but it does reduce light into the camera.

I’m still experimenting. Have not gotten crisp images yet.

I did not realise that the airsoft pistols go down when shooting until I saw your post here and the Instagram video. :D
It really looks odd, now that I know, that this is a thing :D :D

Recently I watched a video from the youtube Channel The Action Lab, showing how to make an easy and quick hydrophobic surface.

I tried it out myself and recordet the results with my Chonros 1.4:

I gave my coworker some of my high speed footage of an Angstadt MDP-9 and their direct blow back UDP-9 recoil comparison. He used it in his video review of the MDP-9

Guess I need a more macro macro lens. I'd like to see more details of the "boiling" when it ignites.

Can you use a spacer to make your lens macro?

I don't remember seeing Schlieren footage made with Chronos cameras, so here's mine:

https://youtu.be/Xirhi-e_Bec

https://youtu.be/drPDskRYNDc

https://youtu.be/K9Z0lZsVVyI

It's quite hard to get everything working, the easiest part, oddly, was the camera and editing... Still tons to improve, but I'm happy with the results so far. Any ideas on what to shot with this effect? I do have a air gun, will try that one day.

I’ve been using Schlieren to study firearms. Here is an article I did. Images captured with my Chronos.
