11 second chronos 2.1 clip
« on: February 08, 2020, 11:58:26 AM »
i got some lighting and an okay lens.

here's a 1920x1080 1000FPS clip:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5TU0oZnp0Y

it's at focal ratio of 1.8 and the focus might be a little off.

Thanks for uploading!
Focus is a bit off for sure, 1920x1080 should be quite a bit sharper usualy.
If this is at f/1.8, what lens did you use? The Bokeh (Look of the Background Blur) looks to me, that the used Lens is closed down somewhat. So, if it was shot at 1.8, the lens would be an 1.2 or faster then, or your lens is not competely open.
If you used an f/1.8 Maximum Apperture Lens (For Example an Nikon 50mm 1.8 Lens), this Would be like f/2.8 or f/4 or something, just judging from the Look of the image, where you can Clearly see the 7 Blades of the Iris..What Gain Setting and Shutter-Speed/ Shutter angle was this shot on?

oops - yes, i just noticed that i have it set to 2.8, not 1.8

the lens is a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 D

it was shot with 0db  gain.

i'm not sure what you mean by shutter angle, but it the 1000 fps setting sets the exposure to 993.23 usec.

i'll try taking another recording and posting it.

here's a new clip 1k fps at 1920x1080: https://youtu.be/T0FSl5ORMEM

and here's one at 5k fps at 640x480: https://youtu.be/8xpxutVUQTg

i don't think the 2.1 can do any faster than 5k.  i believe the 1.4 can do 20k at a low resolution.  it's kind of a bummer that the 2.1 can't do that.  i'm assuming that's a software limitation.

Well, you will have to lower the resolution even more, to get higher Framerates (That is just the way highspeedcameras work... Total number of Pixels of a Frame multiplied by time will stay mostly constant, so lower Resolution = Faster). Look at the datasheet! 2.1 can do over 20kfps if you turn down the Resolution enough. The 1.4 can do over 30kfps, that is a Sensor thing though.

Thanks for the other two clips! The new 1000 fps one looks way more sharp!

1000fps at 993,23 µs would mean an shutter angle of about 358°, according to my calculator. Just think of it in terms of an percentage of possible exposure. 1000 fps means, that frames will be captured in 1/1000s = 1 ms = 1000µs intervalls. if the exposure would be 360° now (the theoretical maximum, most time not possible in the real world due to Hardware Limitations), the Image would be exposed all the way through till the camera would start to expose the next image. 180° would be half the time exposure and so on. The Thing about shutter angle is, that if you will change the Framerate, your motion blur will still look similar, no matter what framerate it is shot at, when you play it back at normal speed. (Hope this explained the Shutter angle thing a bit, and didnt cause more confusion...).
.
Also, if this is at gain 0 in that new 1000fps clip, you either got a very well lit Tap or the 2.1 is just that good in low light!

So, i downloaded that clip (For some reason it is not possible to download in 1920x1080, so i got the 1280x720 file of this video) and played around with it a bit. Uploaded as an attachment here to this post.
I corrected the Color, since white-Balance seems a little bit off, also made it a tiny bit brighter and did try to remove the Grain and compression artifacts from youtube video compression as good as possible, while also trying to sharpen it.
The Footage can be graded surprisingly well, especialy given the Fact, that i just got a lower Resolution, highly compressed File to work with! Cant go too crazy with this file though, but i think you can push the Original Raw files very far, if allready this compressed Footage can be worked with so well.
Again, Thanks a lot for uploading.

It's not possible to download 1920x1080 on youtube when its uploaded in 60fps. The only way to do this is by directly going through youtubes API to pull the video (can get you banned if done too much). For some reason 1920x1080 60fps is like on a separate server or something. If he uploaded in 30fps you would be able to.

How much lighting did you use? I assume this is just natural indoor lighting

Could be, but the Background looks kinda dark... Thats why i thought, the Water may be lit. Also the Light for The Background in the Video does Flicker a bit.

i used two LED lights (amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y85Z7ML) when i shot the video.

i assume the flickering is because of some kind of refresh rate on the LED lighting.  i'm not sure.

Nah, i dont think the LED´s themself flicker. The Water and The Tap are lit very well, and do not Flicker, but the Background does. Can happen with some Home Lighting. For Example normal Light bulbs of smaller Power tend to do that. This is just the 50 or 60 Hz Flicker of your Mains Power. Its very subtle also, not too distracting.

yes, that makes sense that the flicker is from the room lights.

btw, the 2.1 will not let me set the resolution lower than 640 x 480 and fps any faster than 5,406.  it rejects anything beyond these limits and won't let it be applied to the setting.

the data sheet indicates that it should be able to do 1920 x 8 at 100,000 fps, but this appears as though it's not possible with the current version of the software.

https://www.krontech.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/FM-ENGR-50002-Chronos-2.1-HD-Datasheet-Rv1.pdf

also, looking at the data sheet, there's no way the battery runtime is an hour long.  i can sit and watch the battery drain 1% every 10-15 seconds.  seems like it might last 15 minutes tops.

hopefully software updates allow greater than 5,000 fps because the reason i bought it was to do some engineering analysis that will require at least 10,000 fps.  low resolution isn't a problem for the analysis, but i need the speed.
