Saving over network: Speed question/issue
« on: October 23, 2020, 08:48:57 AM »
Hello nice girls and guys.

Just a quick question: I am shooting quite much with my 2.1 and it would be nice to have the camera save as fast as possible over network (smb). I wonder if it is possible to make that as fast as to eSata/SSD, which I also have connected? Where are the limitations?

Thanks!

As far as i am aware, eSata is the fastest connection, think i heard some people from Krontech say that more than once, if i recall correctly. I am no specialist in comunication protocolls by any stretch, but my best guess would be that eSata is treated as just memory, so way less Comunication Overhead, over Network, there should also be a lot of data Request - Answer kind of stuff happening, as well as Checksums for the pakets sent, making sure they are comunicating with the right target for the Packets, and just way more things happening which do not purely move data. Its at this point basically two PCs comunicating versus one PCs "Internal" Storage. so i am not sure where the Limiting Factor is, could maybe be the Network controler or internal processing power of the Chronos to get all the Data into the Network in the First place, and eSata maybe needs less processing power, and is faster? Not sure if that is correct, but thats maybe whats happening. Maybe someone from Krontech who actually knows what is really going on, can explain better. I am not sure if The network connection will beat the eSata for .h264 file transfer, but at least DNG and TIFF, eSata should be the fastest option you have to get the data off of the Camera, and i also think there isnt much, that can be done about that right now.

There is the most recent Statement about this:
 http://forum.krontech.ca/index.php?topic=596.msg3761#msg3761
"- save the footage via the eSATA connector for an optimal transfer speed (it is about 2 times faster than using USB and 3 times faster than using an SD card). This is even more important when saving at uncompressed formats if wait time is a constraint."
So i think eSata should be the Fastest option indeed.

Thanks! Does somebody have some experiences? If everything is performing at it's best, where would one expect the bottleneck? How much fps can be achieved at max?

Thanks! Martin
